While the entire island of Mallorca rates as a gorgeous backdrop for films, our interactive 3-hour walking tour of Palma concentrates on locations used in film, popular television series, and commercials.
The 2016 British-USA production of the miniseries The Night Manager left its mark on Palma where a variety of locations were used as backdrops which, as if by magic, became an Istanbul hotel or a restaurant in Madrid. And the 2019 British daytime drama The Mallorca Files has brought the island priceless publicity, attracting over 2 million viewers.
But Palma served as a background for films for well over a century and Mallorca has been used in hundreds of well-known as well as less popular films, TV series, and commercials. In 1950 the black and white film Black Jack became the first Hispanic-North American co-production. The presence of actors George Sanders, Patricia Roc, Agnes Moorehead, and a young Lola Flores on the streets of Palma created such a high expectation, that the shooting of this film about drug smugglers became a challenging task.
The glamour of premieres, sometimes with the presence of the actors and actresses, sent the inhabitants of Palma quite mad. In 1962, a bikini worn by Hollywood star Elke Sommer in the film Bahia de Palma caused a scandal with the censors of the period, becoming the first time a bikini was worn in a Spanish film.
